It is a type of PVC coated fabric produced using a semi-coated machine with a high-strength scrim reinforcement. The scrim can be made from fiberglass, nylon, polyester, or a combination of these materials.

Many tents are made from cotton canvas but have a heavy-duty PVC coated fabric on the roof for added strength and waterproofing. Some tents are entirely made from PVC coated fabric.
